$H_\infty$ circle criterion observer design for Lipschitz nonlinear systems with enhanced LMI conditions - This note deals with observer design for Lipschitz nonlinear systems via LMI. A new LMI condition is proposed to solve the problem of mathcalH_infty circle criterion observer design. This enhanced LMI is less conservative than those proposed in the literature for the same class of systems by using the same methodology. Indeed, thanks to a new and judicious use of the Young's relation, additional degree of freedoms are included in the LMI, contrarily to some recent results, which turn to be particular cases of what we proposed in this paper. This additional decision variables allow to improve the feasibility of the proposed LMI. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Spectral approximation of the IMSE criterion for optimal designs in kernel-based interpolation models. - We address the problem of computing IMSE-optimal designs for random field interpolation models. A spectral representation of the IMSE criterion is obtained from the eigendecomposition of the integral operator defined by the covariance kernel of the random field and integration measure considered. The IMSE can then be approximated by spectral truncation and bounds on the error induced by this truncation are given. We show how the IMSE and truncated-IMSE can be easily computed when a quadrature rule is used to approximate the integrated MSE and the design space is restricted to a subset of quadrature points. Numerical experiments are carried out and indicate (i) that retaining a small number of eigenpairs (in regard to the quadrature size) is often sufficient to obtain good approximations of IMSE optimal quadrature-designs when optimizing the truncated criterion and (ii) that optimal quadrature-designs generally give efficient approximations of the true optimal designs for the quadrature approximation of the IM
Nonlinear circle-criterion observer design for an electrochemical battery model - Smart battery management systems require reliable information on the internal state of the battery, which are unavailable through direct measurements. Electrochemical models are relevant in this context as these describe the internal phenomena governing the battery dynamics. These models can thus be used to design observers, which provide estimates of the state variables online. In this paper, we consider a single particle electrochemical model of a lithium-ion battery given by a set of ordinary differential equations built from the spatial discretization of partial differential equations (PDEs) that locally describe the mass and charge transport of lithium. We then design a nonlinear observer, whose global exponential stability and robustness are guaranteed provided that a linear matrix inequality holds. The latter is shown to be verified for standard model parameters values. Simulation results based on plug-in hybrid electric vehicle tests on the original PDE model are presented, which illustrate the good p
